Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about choosing, using, and caring for your Kirk McCullough cut-down duck call.

Choosing Your Call

What is a cut-down duck call?
A cut-down is a duck call with the tone board cut and reshaped from its original design. That reshaping gives it more realism and range than a standard call. On public land especially, it has a proven track record of pulling mallards to the decoys consistently, which is why it has become the call serious hunters reach for.
I'm new to cut-down calls. Which one should I start with?
Start with the Basic Threaded Keyhole Cut-Down. It blows easy with a smooth sound, which makes it the right pick for a first cut-down, a youth hunter, or anyone who wants a user-friendly call. See the Basic Threaded Keyhole →

Inserts (KM Outlaw)

Are all your cut-down inserts the same?
No. Every insert has its own cut, shape, and profile. Kirk designs, cuts, and tunes every call sold.
What do the KM Outlaw inserts do, and how do they differ?
Every KM Outlaw insert has a centralizer and a self-sealing flange, and each additional insert comes with a threaded protective sleeve. Run the full set and your KM Outlaw works like several calls in one, each with its own sound profile.

Using Your Call

How do I blow a cut-down duck call?
Cut-downs reward rhythm and restraint, not volume. Three things to start: the basic quack is just air, no grunt or growl needed; you don't have to be the loudest call in the woods; and the rhythm of your chatter is often the most effective part of your calling. For full technique and Kirk's video demos, see How To Blow A Cut-Down Duck Call.
How long does it take to get good with a cut-down?
Blowing the call is easy. Using it effectively in the field is the part that takes practice. Learn the sounds, timing, and rhythm through real reps, not just videos. Pick a good call, stick with it, and it comes year by year.
